Ofakim is a town located in the southern region of Israel. It has a populace of approximately 25,000 residents of which about 40% are immigrants from the FSU and Ethiopia. Ofakim is in close proximity to the Gaza Strip – 10 aerial kilometres- and its citizens are suffering incoming fire. It’s painfully high unemployment rate is one of the highest in Israel and Ofakim is dubbed the “capital” of redundancy and destitute families. Approximately one fourth of the families are cases handled by the Welfare Agency.
Over the last few months there have been horrific terror attacks on our communities surrounding the Gaza strip; missile attacks and fire balloons have burned approximately 8,000 acres of land in the area. These communities are in a disastrous state. Agriculture has been severely damaged, business is slow; many people find it hard to go to their places of employment. Prices on vegetables and fruits are significantly expensive. People are struggling to make ends meet. The government is urging people to support floundering businesses in order to strengthen the area’s economy.
Due to this emergency situation, we have received an urgent request and a heartfelt plea from the principal of the Ofakim Elementary School to please conduct a breakfast program for the needy children.
