Chamah is a charitable tzedaka organization operating in the United States, Israel and Russia. It was founded in 1953 underground in the former Soviet Union. The programs which Chamah has been successfully operating for nearly fifty years are aimed to upgrade Jewish awareness among Russian Jews, helping the elderly and needy.
The broad scope of Chamah's activities in the United States, Israel and Russia include soup kitchens, "Meals on Wheels" programs, medical and home care for the elderly, senior citizen centers, community centers, institutions for underprivileged children, distribution of food staples for the hungry and needy population from all walks of life in Russia, day care centers, youth clubs, seminars, weekend retreats, Judaic classes for adults, Judaic classic publications in the Russian language and "Alef" the only Jewish weekly magazine in the Russian language read worldwide.
Chamah is recognized as a major leading international Jewish organization. The programs of Chamah in Israel are supported by the Jewish Agency - (Sochnut), the government of Israel, the Labor and Social Department, Keren Kayemet Le'Israel and other government offices as well as private donations from within the country and abroad and from Chamah in New York.
Programs of Chamah in the United States and Russia are supported by the Russian Jewish Congress, Joint Distribution Committee, Claims Conference, NYANA , foundations, private donations and donations from international corporations such as "Philip Morris International", "Slim-Fast International", etc.
